A lot has happened in the twenty-four years since Rotteneggs first began. Since then, the Internet has changed quite significantly; and while the digital landscape may be different, the core values and concepts of Rotteneggs have more or less stayed the same since it's inception - providing the perfect digital time capsule for people fed up with the trajectory of modern social media and how content is curated and consumed. For those that remember, RE filled many a niche and had an excellent way of executing it. Eggs.
In saying that, for those who don't know, here is a simple step-by-step guide on creating an egg, revised for today's digital climate.
1. What is your egg about? Make sure to include as much information as possible. Include any relevant examples and descriptions that help convey your egg. However try not to fluff your egg; an egg doesn't necessarily have to have a considerable amount of content to be good. Quality over quantity.
2. Make sure to include photos/pictures that help illustrate what you are trying to convey in your egg. Whether they're diagrams to help articulate a point, or photos of an urban exploration you have done. Pictures elevate an egg and give it more depth and credibility. It also shows you took your time in planning and creating your egg. Uploading and linking photos can be an arduous task, so it shows you didn't just rush it and throw it up half-assed. That being said, don't feel as though your egg NEEDS photos, if you think it doesn't. They do help, however, and will most likely get a better response. For a more indepth guide on adding photos, please check out this egg.
3. Make sure all your grammar and spelling has been double-checked. If you're going to put the time into making an egg, make sure it's legible and worded correctly, please don't half-ass it.
4. Make sure you add your egg to the correct part of the Directory. If you are unsure, place it in Miscellaneous for the time being and notify a mod who will move it to the correct area.
5. Constructive criticism is welcome on eggs; however pointless abuse will not be tolerated. For more information, see the guidelines.
6. Please remember to hyperlink any URLs within your egg if you have any.
7. Eggs of an illegal nature such as carding or fraud related activities will be not be tolerated and will be deleted. See the guidelines.
8. Feel free to link your eggs to other parts of the discussion boards, ie: if you have a new UE egg you want people to see and comment on, you can post a link to it in the Urban Exploration board.
9. While 'Egg Points' are currently unavailable at this time, we are working tirelessly to bring this feature back to Rotteneggs. In the interim however, users can 'like' eggs, as is a standard feature; as well as comment on eggs and vote between 0-5 stars respectively.
10. Each month 10 of the most popular eggs (as rated by members) will be featured in the Egg Spotlight. This list will rotate at the beginning of each month, based on the most highly rated eggs.
If you're ever stuck for ideas or how to format your egg, have a browse in The Egg Directory and perhaps even the Legacy Egg Vault. There are plenty of examples of quality eggs to help with inspiration; as well as formatting.
If you have any questions regarding eggs, please message a mod or SysOp.
